Sustainability Project: Humanure

Clara & Mary & Humanure siteWe have been doing a lot of work and research on sustainability. There are so many levels to it, but one basic thing that must be dealt with in a very careful and thoughtful manner is human waste. Particularly at this early stage, when we don’t have any permanent infrastructure, it is important to make sure we are handling it carefully. When we have a permanent structure, we are planning on using some of the really advanced composting toilets that are readily available on the market. But, until then, we have settled on a home-made composting toilet system, which involved bagging and disposing of the human waste (with pine pellets/shavings). This weekend, we were able to eliminate part of the disposal by building the beginnings of a compost pile. We will keep an eye on it to make sure it is working properly (ie. actually composting in place and not blowing away). We’ve sited it where it shouldn’t have any impacts on our development, and it will be kept separate so it will not be in contact with anything intended for human consumption.
