Recently I spent some time discussing our site development plans with a builder. We want to prioritize building the barn, which will allow us to really get started with our ranching work. A large, airy and well-planned barn will allow us to store our hay, tools and equipment in one place, out of the weather. It will provide shade in the summer and block the winds and rain in the winter. Sturdy stalls will provide secure places to feed or medicate horses, milk the cow, brood chicks, and observe or assist with lambing.

 We also hope the barn will serve as a focal point for people. As the first building visitors will see when they arrive at the ranch, it will be a convenient place to gather and exchange messages.

Because Yolo County is a strongly agricultural area, there are a variety of barns and farm buildings to provide inspiration. The examples sown here reflect the classic, wooden design that we prefer. Please leave a comment with your thoughts on barn design and use!
